12-Year-Old Arrested For Robberies

MILWAUKEE – A robbery spree on Milwaukee’s south side came to an end after police arrested several suspects, including a 12-year-old boy.

There were four robberies within 20 minutes Monday night. Police swung into action and nabbed four suspects. The youngest one is only 12.

One man didn’t want to be identified, because he says the roving group of teens robbed him and his mom at gunpoint.

“And they put the gun to my mom’s face and told me and her to empty our pockets and told my mom if she didn’t hurry up that he was gonna kill her,” the man said.

Officers Cory Harris and Jose Arzaga were in the area as part of the safe streets initiative. They raced to the scene.

“The suspect that was arrested was 13-years-old,” Officer Arzaga said.

The district’s anti-gang unit rounded up the other three suspects ranging in age from only 12 to 19.

“I have children of my own and when we do come into contact with these young individuals committing crimes it hurts,” Officer Harris said.

This is a violent group that beat up two men. The victims are grateful police got them so quickly. “I was really satisfied with the work they did last night,” one victim said.

Police are still looking for at least one more suspect. The district attorney will decide if the 12 and 13 year olds should be charged as adults or juveniles.

Gun Drawing by Ryan Reynolds

A Santana High School student has been suspended after a teacher found pictures he drew of guns in his backpack.

15-year old Ryan Reynolds was suspended after his ninth grade teacher found a sketch of an AK-47.

Reynolds told FOX6 he drew the picture after his father, who is a gun enthusiast, took him to a gun show. He says, “There’s no harm or threat behind this picture.”

Another drawing done by Reynolds, showed a stick figure labeled “me” shooting another stick figure labeled “you.”

“The pictures weren’t directed at anyone in or near the school,” says Ryan’s father, Jason St. Mars, “They were just drawings.  They could have been cops or robbers, or my son shooting at a terrorist.”

A third drawing depicted a person shooting in tandem at another person.

Ryan’s father, says there is nothing in the student handbook saying students are not allowed to draw pictures of guns.

He says he was outraged by the school’s action. “It was disturbing because I don’t feel like my son should be suspended for expressing himself.  We have freedom of speech in this country.”

“Our schools are extremely concerned that we maintain a safe environment at all times,” says Superintendent of Grossmont High School District, Robert Collins.  “A safe environment for students and a safe environment for teachers.  That’s paramount.”

Collins says when a student is suspended it should be a wake up call to parents.

“I know that everybody looks upon disciplinary actions by a school district as being punitive in nature but my experience has been that it’s an event that can be extremely beneficial to the youngster and their family,” said Collins.

Ryan’s parent say they believe the suspension is in retaliation to them calling the school in a prior incident to complain about the teacher.

In March of 2001, a 15-year old student at Santana High School shot and killed two students and injured 13 others.

High Gas Prices Affecting Food Prices

MILWAUKEE – High gas prices have something to do with the high food prices. Milk, eggs, you name it…it’s higher.

Now, places like Sam’s Club are limiting the amount of rice people can buy.

It turns out, the limit on rice at Sam’s Club isn’t the only thing in the news. Almost every grocery store you go to…you’ll see an increase in food prices.

“I think it’s ridiculous. It’s really hard to make your ends meet,” Deborah Jeter said.

Jeter lives it. A trip to the grocery store takes a little bit more of her hard earned money than in years…even months past.

Now, news comes…the two biggest U.S. warehouse chains: Sam’s Club and Costco, are limiting how much rice customers can buy.

“Then I was listening this morning, I heard about the rice going up,” Jeter said.

It’s just more bad news for Jeter, who shops all the time for her family and is definitely feeling the pinch.

“Eggs are really off the chart,” Jeter said.

In fact, according the Wall Street Journal, milk is up 30 percent over the past year. Rice is up 13 percent and milk is up 10 percent.

“It definitely impacts my family and it makes me really make wiser choices because it’s affecting my entire state of being right now,” Jeter said.

Experts believe the prices are not going down any time soon, if ever. The bottom line, their advice: buy in bulk.
