Trolley Crimes on the Rise – FOX6 San Diego
Some stunning budget cuts for San Diego schools could result in massive staff cuts which would include hundreds of teachers. The San Diego Unified School District has to make $80 million in cuts to next year’s school budget
Hundreds of members from the community showed up at Tuesday’s school board meeting to protest the cuts, and to ask the board not to eliminate jobs.
Members of the School Board say the state budget has forced them to make the cuts.
The Board voted 4-1 to slash the jobs of hundreds of employees including nurses, counselors, administrators and at least 630 classroom teachers.
Lindsay Burningham, a kindergarten teacher at Ellen Brown School says she is almost certain she will be among those to receive a pink slip.
Burningham says, “I went out and bought a condo and was moving on with my life, knowing that I now had a contract and job.”
She says she fears she will be unable to get another teaching job due to all the statewide teaching positions that are being eliminated.
Employees who are notified about the layoffs are not necessarily out of a job. That will depend on revisions the Governor makes to the budget in May.

The bodies of five people were discovered in a rural area off a new highway early Tuesday.
The Tijuana municipal police source says that found of the five people found appear to be minors, and one of the victims was female.
The bodies were found by a passerby in an area known as Rancho Los Patrillos.
The victims had been handcuffed and shot to death, according to a news agency in Tijuana.
Violence in the region continues to increase and analyst say that weakening the Arellano Felix drug cartel has allowed smaller criminal groups to gain strength.
Minors are rarely ever a target, but earlier this year the 11-year-old daughter of a Tijuana police commander was shot to death by armed gunman.
Fire officials say some 60 residents of the Southern California desert town of Mecca have been evacuated from their homes after part of a Union Pacific train derailed and two of its tanker cars caught fire, sending a cloud of acid fumes into the night sky.
Authorities said no one has been hurt in the incident, which was reported at 9:29 p.m. Monday.
Riverside County Fire Capt. Julie Hutchinson said a one-mile radius has been set up around the accident site and no one is being let inside because of the potentially hazardous fumes.
She said emergency crews are formulating an action plan but plan to stay clear until daylight.
The derailment is next to Highway 111, which has been shut down for a seven-mile stretch south of State Road 195.
